UK universities to twin with Palestinian ones…

The Universities of Manchester and Leeds are in the process of twinning with Bir-Zeit and An-Najah universities of Palestine. In this remarkable move, both palestine groups managed to collate enough people in a general assembly and convince the majority to vote in favour of this motion… considering the apathy often faced my palestine groups, even from the arab & muslim communities, this makes this success nothing short of a miracle.

The student unions of both universities are now resolved to support the Palestinian right to education, they acknowledge that the adverse affect the occupation has on students, it also interestingly notes the following:

5. That students from Gaza are banned from reaching the 8 Palestinian Universities in the West Bank: In 2000 there were 350 Gazan students at Birzeit University, in April 2005 there were only 35.

6. That 362km of the projected 730km of the Israeli separation wall has been constructed, all of it on Palestinian lands, dividing, isolating and encircling Palestinian areas and Universities.

7. That 8 out of the total 11 universities in the West Bank and Gaza Strip have been shelled or broken into by the Israeli Army since September 2000.

I am just pleased that this is being acknowldged…

  1. This is great news… Hopefully it would shed more light on what’s happening in Palastine…

  2. I hope so… and am very optimistic that it will.

    Thanks for visiting :)

  3. Don’t mean to sound pessimistic, but I’ll start celebrating when this goes all the way through. I really hope it does. I found it interesting though that I couldnt find a single news article on the story (maybe I didn’t look hard enough). Still, I think if this was being considered in an American university, the press would be all over it.

  4. we have done it

  5. student,
Nice website but I still can’t find a news article about the twining on it. Any links you can provide would be very helpful.

I recieved an email about the manchester twinning, it only happened on wednesday, I am guessing that the relevant groups have not updated their sites.

    student well done :)

  7. Thank you loolt. I know a bunch of other campus zionist groups that deserve to be gagged!

  8. actually, it is twisting the union ploicy to say that anyone was gagged… it was merely saying that critiszing Israel/supporting Palestine and palestinians is NOT anti-semitic, and that that argument cannot be used if someone wishes to complain about palestine support or friends of palestine societies on campuses.

  9. I see…I’m not surprised the zionist publication twisted the words. Do you by any chance have the actual quote of the union policy, or a reference to an unbiased article (the leedspsg link is not working)? Thank you.

  10. I updted the post, and at the end there are links to the student union referenda, one for leeds and the ofther for manchester, checking manchester site it says that all motions were passed.

    Hope that helps :)

  11. It does, thank you.
