The Universities of Manchester and Leeds are in the process of twinning with Bir-Zeit and An-Najah universities of Palestine. In this remarkable move, both palestine groups managed to collate enough people in a general assembly and convince the majority to vote in favour of this motion… considering the apathy often faced my palestine groups, even from the arab & muslim communities, this makes this success nothing short of a miracle.
The student unions of both universities are now resolved to support the Palestinian right to education, they acknowledge that the adverse affect the occupation has on students, it also interestingly notes the following:
5. That students from Gaza are banned from reaching the 8 Palestinian Universities in the West Bank: In 2000 there were 350 Gazan students at Birzeit University, in April 2005 there were only 35.
6. That 362km of the projected 730km of the Israeli separation wall has been constructed, all of it on Palestinian lands, dividing, isolating and encircling Palestinian areas and Universities.
7. That 8 out of the total 11 universities in the West Bank and Gaza Strip have been shelled or broken into by the Israeli Army since September 2000.
I am just pleased that this is being acknowldged…
